grab bag season

It's that time of year again when people that see each other often, but do not know each other super well decided that they should organize a gift exchange. It's really a huge gamble but sometimes it works out to your benefit. Lindsey participated in a grab bag this year and she hit the jackpot.

I have never had good luck with the grab bag. When I was young and nieve this new concept of a random trade excited me. It took me a couple of tries to learn otherwise. In kindergarten I got an ugly glass clown. I remember that my teacher laughed a little bit when I opened it and I felt terrible. I bet I was expecting to open a pet kitten.

Either way, that disappointment was nothing compared to my pull in the second grade grab bag. Some kids got stuffed animals, other kids got pet kittens, and I got a box of fruit roll ups. for real. I know that fruit roll ups were the dessert in every kid's lunch box, and what kid doesn't love dessert, but come on. Everyone laughed and that meant I almost cried. As an adult I realize that the only person that should have been embarrassed was the kid that put that in the grab bag. You know that their parents were like 'grab bag? god damn it.' and then reached into the kitchen cabinet. And do you know what the girl that donated the fruit roll ups got? A diary. WITH A LOCK AND KEY. That's right. She got the best grab in the bag. I asked her if she wanted to trade and she said 'yeah right.'

Whatever, that girl was a snake. She made fun of me all the time. And then in fifth grade she asked me to pull her hair so that it would grow faster. I wasn't stupid. I told her that maybe she should try running in the opposite direction while I pulled.

raise your hand if you need more paper

I'm done with finals but I wont go back to chicago for another week. Most of my time will probably be spent wandering around town between here and my studio.
I finished my art history exam last night.
Below is the extent of my notes on Georgia O'Keeffe.

I thought that was it, but then I turned the page and found a bit more.

all of which I already knew.

'I have a ten page paper to write'

'tonight? well you'll probably be faster than me.'

'no, I won't. but eddie said he'd help me with it. That doesnt mean he will though.'

'oh, that always happens to me with guys I date. They say they'll help me write a paper but then they just try to kiss me instead.'

an image

plus a palette

I'm hardly ever on time

After I turned the camera off I looked up and saw a frumpy middle-aged woman standing over me. She asked me if I loved animals as much as she did. I told her probably not.

last night I dreamt that I wore a cute dress and went to a bulls game.

Thursday, November 8, 2007

laura and kevin, you're sitting too close to the tv.

Today, in my art history class, we watched a clip from the disney animation 'Bambi.' I thought that it was pretty cute, and I have to say, it made me want to watch the whole thing. When it was done a bunch of hands shot up. All anyone could talk about was how that was the most traumatizing film they had ever seen, and that it was the scariest kids movie ever, and that the storm scene 'really freaked them out.' Now I know that bambi's mother dies, and yes, that's depressing at any age, but come on. grow up.

I take the cake for watching the creepiest, scariest, and most disturbing children's films on the market. I'm not going to pretend that I don't know every word to the opening of Strawberry Shortcake, but allow me to compensate.

Let's begin where we last left off - 'Return to Oz'
This movie gets two clips. Trust me, it deserves it.

What kid doesnt love something that has wheels for feet - and hands. Did I say 'something' - I meant 10 things.

If the wheelers were not bad enough, don't worry there is also a witch.
oh, and she doesnt have a head. No wait, she has hundreds of them actually.

moving on.
This next clip is the trailer for the movie The Dark Crystal.
I made eddie watch this with me when I had my wisdom teeth taken out.
I wanted him to feel what pain was.

I don't think I need to re-post the clip of the child catcher in chitty chitty bang bang.....once is enough.

Now, many of you may have seen this wonder around campus. Probably throwing down some sick dance moves. This scene haunted my dreams for my entire childhood.

The dragon was terrifying, but that part with the parents in the mirror was worse.

Did you watch the normal Disney version of Sleeping Beauty?
Not me. I watched the creepy one.

My dresses get ripped to shreds when I go out looking for princes too. They are just so darn evasive.

And BELIEVE me, this is not all of them. Some were so obscure and bazarre I could not track them down on youtube.
I'm not saying I hated these films. In fact I would guess that I have seen most of them over 50 times.
I'm just trying to explain why, at three years old, I talked out of the side of my mouth and acted like a cynical little old man.
Sorry, molly. No matter how much you'd like to think it, you are not weirder than I am. It took years of conditioning to get me to this point.

Also, here is an arrangement I made about flight. I showed it to eddie.
He smiled and said that he gets it.

Wednesday, November 7, 2007

I used to watch this movie, 'return to oz,' about a little girl that everyone thought was crazy.
I could relate to her long braided hair.
We also both had pet chickens and green eyes.
